GRANITES.

Stone type prefix: G

Geological Outline

Granites are igneous rocks,
created by eruptive magma and
molten minerals which have cooled
under great pressure. The result is
a rock structure where the close
grain gives strength and a nearly
impervious surface. Granites can
be polished for decorative effect
and the colour ranges from deep
black to nearly pure white.

Traditional Uses

The strength and durability of
granites leads to their use for
paving, setts and kerbing, especially where heavy vehicular loadings predominate. When flamed or ‘picked’ the surfaces have high slip resistance characteristics. The wide range of colour and finishes make granites a favoured material for the manufacture of benches, bollards, plinths and for cladding facias, building exteriors etc.
