SANDSTONE - 'YORK' ETC.

Stone type prefix: S

Geological Outline

Sandstones are sedimentary rocks
where small sand or grit particles
have been coalesced with silicas,
calcium and other deposits,
sometimes iron bearing. Usually
laid down in semi-separated beds,
sandstones are often quarried by
cleaving the stone free from the
underbed.

Traditional Uses

Sandstones and associated
gritstones are used for paving in
public spaces, also for ashlar and
masonry for buildings. Because
they do not polish under footfall or
traffic they have great longevity
when used for paving.
